Reasonless Rhymes and Vulgar Auditors: An Abbey Museum Floor Talk

The Friends of the Abbey Museum Presents - Reasonless Rhymes and Vulgar Auditors

Join us on Saturday the 24th August at the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, as Friends of the Abbey Museum Presents another amazing Floor Talk with Dr Marcus Harmes, lecturer in Study Skills at University of Southern Queensland. This floor talk is an exciting discussion that focuses on The Prince of Wales, Proverbs and Oral Cultures in Jacobean England.

Proverbs remain current and widely used in modern spoken language, but we perhaps take them for granted and are certainly not threatened by them. This reaction is different to how people in sixteenth and seventeenth century England viewed proverbs!

Society at this time was overwhelmingly illiterate, and short, rhyming statements offered comment and instruction on many aspects of life. Proverbs could be wise or obscene, obvious or epigrammatically obscure, and for some people they were frightening precisely because in an oral rather than a literate culture, they spread so quickly and the ideas they suggested could find a wide and receptive audience.

In particular, this presentation will focus on a proverb that was circulating in London in about 1605. This proverb reads: ‘Henry the 8 pulled down abbeys and cells, but Henry the 9 shall pull down Bishops and bells’. In a few words this proverb suggested nothing less than total revolution in the politics of religion of Jacobean England. Dr Harmes will discuss the ways elites at the time feared this proverb, regarded it as seditious and attempted to punish its authors.

This talk will appeal particularly to those interested in history of religion in England, as well as those interested in the Jacobean period.
The presentation will commence at 7.30pm at the Abbey Hall: 1-63 The Abbey Place Caboolture. Tickets cost $6 for guests and $3 for Friends of the Abbey Museum. For more information or to make a booking, please call the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology on 5495 1652.

Amazing race hits Sunshine Coast to support Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors

-Event Sponsors-

Press Release:

The Sunshine Coast’s very own amazing race is set to take place on Sunday 26 May, 2013, to raise money for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors in the form of a car rally fundraiser.

The mastermind behind the fundraiser is 13 year old Tegan Lather from Bribie Island.

“Last year’s event was extremely successful and everyone who was involved really enjoyed themselves so we want to take it to a new level this year so we can raise even more funds for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital,” Tegan said.

Despite her tender years, Tegan successfully ran the event last year with help from her parents and major sponsor Ferre De Deyne from The Big Kart Track.  Over the past two years she has raised over $30,000 for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and she hopes to raise another $10,000 at this year’s car rally fundraiser.

“The fundraiser has turned into a great community event, Ferre’s support has been exceptional and a number of other local sponsors have come on board including Jetts Coolum and Peregian, Australia Zoo, QCCC Mapleton, Xperiences, Healthy Water Ways, Fireworks Digital Colour, Qld Advertising, Bow Wow Chow, Aussie World and Tangalooma Island Resort,” she said.

Much like the amazing race teams of up to 5 will solve puzzles, take on  fun challenges  at all of the venues of the major sponsors. Teams will compete in fun competitions and navigate their family car around the Sunshine Coast to win fantastic prizes including 5-night stay at the SeaView Resort Mooloolaba valued at over $1,100 as well as family passes to Big Kart Track, Aussie World, Australia Zoo and a tour of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

The contestants and general public will also have a chance to win a Giant Raffle, including a fantastic Dolphin Getaway Package for a family of 4 kindly donated by Tangalooma Island Resort.  Volunteers will be selling raffle tickets at all the fun challenge destinations to raise more money for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.

The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital treated over 5800 sick and injured Australian native wildlife in 2012 alone.  This is at no cost to the public.

Tickets for the rally are $125 per car (up to 5 people) and all profits raised will be donated to Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors.  Registration details can be found at www.wildlifeemergency.com.au/rally.

Glass House Mountains' Bankfoot House works to preserve history and enhance visitor experience

Sunshine Coast Council has unanimously endorsed a report outlining proposed capital works to deliver improved archival, visitor and interpretive elements for the council-owned State heritage-listed Bankfoot House. The project will now be referred to council’s 2013/14 budget process for consideration as part of the Heritage Levy expenditure.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said Bankfoot House is the oldest known surviving building in the Glass House Mountains area and documents the history of three generations occupying the same house for more than 130 years.

“As an iconic State heritage-listed place housing a significant collection, Bankfoot House provides the opportunity to preserve and interpret history and stories while providing community access”, he said.

“The proposed capital works takes the region in the right direction in terms of industry and professional heritage collections management.

“This is our opportunity to become a cultural tourism destination of interest to ourselves and our guests from abroad.

“The new facilities will provide an enhanced visitor experience highlighting the value of our heritage, so that years from now, the region will still have an asset that tells future generations how far we have come, socially, economically and culturally.

“This gives everyone in the region an asset of State significance and we have a responsibility to our community to preserve our heritage and social history.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Friends of Bankfoot House who currently undertake the significant work of preserving and making the collection accessible to the public.”

Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said conserving Bankfoot House is in line with council’s commitment of preserving our region’s history and ensuring the character of our community is protected.

“The Bankfoot House Capital Works Report provides an overview of the second stage works in line with the Bankfoot House Management Plan adopted by council in 2006,” she said.

“Funds for the new facility have been progressively identified within the Cultural Heritage Levy since
it was introduced in 2010/2011.

“The proposed works will provide archival storage for the rare collection, work space for the volunteers, multimedia educational interpretive centre, public amenities, a bus drop-off area and wheelchair access to the new purpose-built facility.

“Council will continue to consult with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to ensure we protect this significant regional and State heritage-listed asset.”

A BEAUTIFUL Sight: Maroon Flag Soars Over Sydney Yet Again

Update posted on Facebook:
PIC: Qld flag flies over Sydney Harbour Bridge amid claims NSW tries to pinch a Qld Origin game next year.

Queensland's flag will once again fly proudly over the Sydney harbour after the Maroons' thrilling win to clinch the State of Origin series at Suncorp Stadium last night.

Premier Campbell Newman watched the game from the stands following the government's decision to relinquish all corporate boxes at major sporting stadiums.

A beaming Mr Newman, hoarse from cheering Queensland to a one point win, said the game typified everything about Queenslanders and their never say die attitude.

"My wife Lisa and I enjoyed sitting among the crowd last night and soaking up the true spirit of Origin," Mr Newman said.

"Something else I'll enjoy is watching the Queensland flag fly high over Sydney once again."

Since 1999, the Premiers of Queensland and New South Wales have had a bet involving the winning State flying its flag in opposition territory.

The Queensland flag will be hoisted on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Monday 9 July.

"If Queensland had lost the series the New South Wales flag would have been flown from the Story Bridge. It hasn't happened for seven years and won't for another seven years at least," Mr Newman said.

Victorian officials have also been calling for more Origin games to be played in Melbourne, a move the Premier does not support.

"We are the traditional home of rugby league and as such we should have as many games as possible," he said.

"My government has made it clear it would support every effort to keep as many Origin games as possible in Queensland."

2012 Queenslander Police Car unveiled ahead of State of Origin 3

Police Minister Jack Dempsey and Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson launched the 2012 QPS State of Origin car at Suncorp Stadium today, ahead of the third game on July 4.

The vehicle was designed specifically for the State of Origin to promote both the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Rugby League.

Minister Dempsey said the Queenslander Police Car was a great way for the Police Service to show support for the team and also get involved in the community.

"The State of Origin brings Queenslanders from all walks of life together to show their state pride and the vehicle helps celebrate that," Mr Dempsey said.

"There was a great outcome with the 2011 QPS State of Origin car, prompting us to bring the concept back for the 2012 State of Origin Series.

"Last year's bonnet was auctioned after the last State of Origin fixture and raised $7,209 for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation.

"This year the money will go towards the Police Citizen's Youth Club to provide the resources needed to help our youth."

Commissioner Atkinson said the bonnet of the vehicle will be signed by the 2012 Queensland State of Origin team before being removed following the third game and donated to the Police-Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC) for charity auction.

"PCYC's do a fantastic job and have been a part of our community for nearly 65 years," Commissioner Atkinson said.

"Their work has had a positive impact on the lives of many young Queenslanders, helping them get their lives back on the right track."

The bonnet of the Queenslander Police Car will be auctioned as part of the PCYC Gala Dinner later in 2012, and the QPS also plan to release a limited number of prints of the vehicle that will be donated to different charitable organisations.

Mr Dempsey said the car would be used to escort the Queensland team from its hotel to Suncorp Stadium for the final game of the series.

"The vehicle will patrol the streets around Suncorp Stadium, including Caxton Street and the Brisbane Central Business District, as fans arrive to watch the game," he said.

"It may also be used at other community events, festivals, or with promotions for the QPS verses NSW Police Rugby League Games.

"The vehicle provides an opportunity for the QPS to positively engage with the community while raising money for a good cause."

Fraud investigations, Brisbane

Hendra Detectives are investigating a number of incidents of credit card theft and fraud where elderly victims have been targeted.

The common tactic used by the offenders is to steal credit cards and then contact the victims by telephone claiming to be from the financial institution.

The victims are told that their cards have been handed in and they are asked to provide their PIN details for verification.  On a few occasions victims have provided these details resulting in money being stolen from their account at ATM outlets.

Police would like to speak with a man pictured in a security photograph outside a Springwood bank on April 29.  He may be able to assist with investigations into the theft of credit cards at an Aspley shopping centre the previous day.

People are reminded that at no time should PIN numbers be disclosed to anyone and they should contact their financial institution immediately if cards are lost or stolen.

Anyone with information which could assist police with their investigations should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously via 1800 333 000 or crimestoppers.com.au 24hrs a day.

Crime Stoppers is a charitable community volunteer organisation working in partnership with the Queensland Police Service.
