Message not getting through on flood safety

Police are issuing a stern warning to all community members to stay away from flood waters.

Police in the St George area say they surprised to see a father allowing two children to swim in a flooded area of Balonne River last week.

Sergeant Mark Shields from St George police said the behaviour was reckless.

“Flood waters can be deceptive. While it may appear safe to wade in, there are any number of unknown objects beneath the surface which can injure or trap people,” Sgt Shields said.

“Currents can also be deceiving and powerful – a lot of flood water around the state is fast moving and very dangerous.

“We are urging people to stay away from flooded areas and to not enter water.

“This week we had another tragic drowning, with a young woman in Cherbourg swimming in a local creek losing her life.

“We simply cannot have another death.

“People must exercise caution in these flooded conditions. It is simply not safe to enter these waters.”

Sgt Shields said the Water Police had been working in the Roma district this week patrolling flood waters in St George.

“We have had the Water Police, Public Safety Response Team and Tactical Crime Group as well as local police in this area throughout the past week working with the community in the local flood response.

“Local waters are very high and very dangerous. People must stay well clear of currents and not enter flooded areas,” Sgt Shields said

In a life-threatening emergency, including being trapped in floodwater, people are urged to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

If people are concerned about reckless behaviour in their communities they should contact local police.
