#TripBlog: A walk in the tall trees at The Great Otway National Park.

In the week before we headed into the sunset on our Victorian road trip, we were speaking to a friend about our travel plans. We mentioned how we planned to drop by The Grampians.

“Ahhh,’’ he replied. “You will see the Otways!” It was the way he said ‘Otways’ that had us nodding hypnotically, `yes, we will see the Otways.’ Truth be told, though, we had never heard of the Otways. Had no idea where or what it was.

It was only as I studied a map as we racked up the miles that it suddenly ``apparated,’’ as Harry Potter might say. Bang! There it was on the map, big and green and occupying the southern tip of the Victorian coastline. Now how did we miss that before?

The Great Otway National Park follows the path of the Great Ocean Road, stretching from Torquay to Princetown. It is more than 100,000ha and appears endless as you drive the Ocean Road.

We drove through just one tiny part of it and were amazed at its beauty. Cool, rushing water runs alongside a well kept walk through moist, green rainforest.

It is as close to the iconic bathroom print of mossy rocks, tall trees, ferns and fresh water as you can find; without a doubt some of the best rainforest we have seen. There are so many walks to do here we hope to come back and spend more time. On one trail, you can walk to Cape Otway, the southernmost point of the region.

It also boasts a fairly new tourist attraction, Otway Fly Treetop Adventures, where you can soar through the treetops clinging for dear life to a zipline. We gave that a miss on account of seriously chilly winds and the fact it was booked up, but had an amazing time walking a nearby rainforest.
