Boat and property owners along Queensland's coastal and river frontages should brace themselves for king tides this week.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said forecasts had predicted a combination of bad weather and king tides across the state in the coming week.
Mr Emerson said the higher "king" tides were predicted in a range of tidal information publications available to the community, including the Queensland Tide Tables 2012.
"These tides are a natural and regular occurrence when the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun come closest to the earth," he said.
"However, even at its most fascinating, nature can be brutal and those in coastal communities need to be aware of potential dangers associated with the ocean.
"Storms and strong winds can contribute to unexpectedly high sea levels, which can catch people off guard.
"This is especially important as the highest tide will be at night."
Mr Emerson said while the tides would affect the entire state coastline, the highest levels would be on the south-east coast.
"People living in these areas should act to secure or move their tinnies, kayaks, garden furniture or any other items away from the water's edge to avoid items being swept up in the higher tides," Mr Emerson said.
"It's also a good idea to clear away any flood debris, including loose pontoons and foliage, to prevent it washing back into waterways.
"If you're planning on heading out around these peak tides, please be vigilant with your safety preparation, keep an eye out for any changes in the weather and make sure someone knows you'll be out on the water.
"Ensuring you're prepared for any outcome on the water is the easiest way to enjoy our wonderful waterways safely."
