Some Interesting Stats for the Upcoming State Election


The Electoral Commission of Queensland has released details of candidate nominations for the 2012 State general election. 

A total of 430 candidates have been nominated across the 89 State electoral districts.  This compares with only 397 candidates at the 2009 State election.  

The ALP, LNP and Queensland Greens are each contesting all 89 seats.  Katter’s Australian Party has a total of 76 candidates, Family First 38 and One Nation 6.  There are 43 Independent candidates. 

The largest number of candidates per district is 8 in Rockhampton.  Bulimba, Caloundra, Ferny Grove, Greenslopes and Redlands attracted only 3 candidates.  Overall there are 318 male and 112 female candidates.  The average age of all candidates is 47, the oldest being 83 and the youngest 18. 

The Electoral Commission will now commence the exhaustive process of printing well over 5 million ballot papers to ensure sufficient ballot papers are available at over 2000 polling places in readiness for Election Day on 24 March 2012. 

Pre-poll centres open for business on Friday 2 March.
