Back in the day, a trip to The Grampians was a big day out and usually involved boarding an old bus. The bus would stop on the other side of the gorge would call out: “How many today Jack.” Jack would yell back the number he had on board and with that, Pearl Cranage would be able to put the kettle on for the right number of people in time for their arrival. That was before mobile phones.
Today, a trip to The Grampians is an easy drive in a comfortable car with a pick of food and drinks along the way. Pearl Cranage’s kiosk still stands today, selling icecreams and other treats. We headed off on the walk to MacKenzie falls, stopping at the Broken Falls on the way. There are quite a few steps leading down to the base of the falls and it makes for an energetic walk. The steps gave us heaps of different vantages for a great shot of the falls.
Swimming in the pool at the base of the falls is not allowed, but most people were happy enough to sit around in the sun on the rocks watching the falls. It seems there is water in the falls pretty much all year round. On the way back we nearly stepped on a brown snake basking in the sun on the pathway. On to the next thing I think.
