Northern road access to Toogoolawah

Police wish to advise motorists that road access to the north of Toogoolawah will remain closed for an unknown period of time due to flood waters in the area.
The Brisbane Valley Highway remains closed at Fernvale with approximately one to two metres of water covering the road over an extended distance. This excess water has originated from Boundary Creek which has burst its banks.
Currently Cressbrook Creek in Toogoolawah itself is overflowing while water is expected to be released from the full Perseverance Dam this morning.
The release of this water may create extra difficulties for residents although police are currently in contact with those areas likely to be affected.
Police are urging motorists to remain patient and if possible avoid the area.

  • Plan to move vehicles, outdoor equipment, garbage, chemicals and poisons to higher locations;
  • Plan which indoor items you will raise or empty if water threatens your home (e.g. freezers and refrigerators); and
  • Check your emergency kit and safeguard your pets.
What to do if you need to evacuate
  • Pack warm clothing, essential medications, valuables, personal papers, mobile phone, photos and mementos in waterproof bags to be taken with your emergency kit;
  • Raise furniture, clothing and valuables on to beds, tables and into roof spaces;
  • Empty freezers and refrigerators, leaving doors open;
  • Turn off power, water and gas;
  • Whether you leave or stay, put sandbags in the toilet bowl and over all laundry/bathroom drain holes to prevent sewage back-flow;
  • Lock your home and take recommended evacuation routes for your area; and
Police remind motorists not to attempt to cross flooded roads or causeways.  Do not risk your life, the lives of those in your vehicle and the lives of rescuers.  Nothing is so important that you need to enter floodwaters.

Gympie being isolated by floods

Police are urging motorists to avoid Gympie as the district braces to be further isolated due to rising flood waters.
All roads to the south and west of Gympie have been cut including the Bruce Highway and Mary Valley Road as a result of flooding, with the current water level of the Mary River sitting just under 16 metres.
Access to the north of Gympie has been available through Old Maryborough Road, however, it is believed this may become unpassable over the next 12 hours.
Tin Can bay Road to the north-east is currently cut at Coondoo Creek while other roads to the north are closed at a variety of locations.
The water level is expected to peak at 19 metres late today.

Floodwaters on the rise Dalby

A Local Disaster Management centre has been set up at the Dalby Agricultural College for residents of Dalby following reports of heavy rainfall in the catchment area overnight.
Police and SES have conducted door knocks in the area advising residents that a further three metres of waters is expected by 6am, which will put a number of yards under water and possibly inundate some houses.
There are some suggestions that the water may reach as high as 3.5metres. Already 12 inches of water is flowing through Russell Street and adjoining Acacia Avenue. On the southern side of town, water from the Myall Creek is flowing onto the Golf Course.
Residents are advised to contact the Local Disaster Management Centre on 4662 6666 in the first instance, in which they will be directed to the Dalby Show Grounds where vehicles will be left on higher ground.
It is then anticipated residents will be ferried to the Agricultural Centre. Residents are encouraged to bring their emergency kits (containing essentials such as torches, batteries, some food and the essentials including linen, a sleeping bag and pillow and any required medication.
Residents with pets are encouraged to try and house their animals with friends or family on higher ground, however all efforts will be made to accommodate pets.
