It seems that Moreton Bay Regional Council has had a wakeup call and is ready to boldly enter in to the new world of social networking.
Moreton Bay Mayor Allan Sutherland moved a motion today (which was seconded by Deputy Mayor Greg Chippendale and later passed unanimously by the council) pledging to use Facebook and Twitter as a means of communicating with the masses.

The awakening followed criticism over a lack of information from MBRC during last week’s flooding.
Alas, it seems some busy body might have stolen the council’s thunder.
Last Monday, when the region was being lashed by storms, a Facebook site was set up under the name Moreton Bay Floods, complete with a variation on the council’s official logo. The person behind the page is unknown.
But what is known is that it now has more than 3000 followers and provided an active exchange of flood information and information about the clean-up.

But don’t accuse MBRC of being behind the eight ball. It does have a Facebook page.
The MBRC page was created in June 2008 and has grand total of two posts and four friends.

It seems that young whipper snapper councillor Adrian Raedel might just have given the council a bad case of whiplash.
He is an active user of Facebook, with 1692 friends and an estimated reach of tens of thousands when considering the number of people reposting information.
His page proved vital during the flooding, scoring messages of thanks from people on his page.
