Phone lines are down and calls are not being connected to emergency services, The New Zealand Herald reports.
The quake was felt as far away as Wellington and Dunedin.
Video has already been posted of the destruction.
Oh no - I so hope that they are all ok? Fingers crossed that no one is hurt and they will be all ok. I am sending good thoughts to Chistchurch - may you all be safe.
